ABOUT THE PROJECT
The City of Miami, in coordination with the Florida Department of Transportation, is proposing to build the Miami Streetcar Project from Government Center in Downtown Miami through Park West, the Entertainment District, Wynwood/Edgewater, Midtown Miami to the Design District and Buena Vista East District. The streetcar is an urban transit circulator that will operate in existing roadways, and provide connectivity among major activity centers, commercial and retail establishments, as well as residential communities throughout the project corridor.

The City of Miami Commission approved a resolution on May 12, 2005, adopting the City of Miami Streetcar Corridor Feasibility Study, Final Report, April 2005. Subsequent to that approval, the City began the next phase of project development in the late Fall of 2005. This phase consists of an Environmental Assessment and Public Information Program. The Environmental Assessment will address technical issues, identify potential project impacts, and update the project's financial plan. The City will begin an approximate a six-month coordination phase with public agencies and the community, starting in February, 2006.

The Miami Streetcar route consists of two loops:
1. The north-south loop runs from SE/SW 1st Street in the south to NE 41st Street in the north.

2. The east-west loop runs westbound on 20th Street, from NE 2nd Avenue to NW 12th Avenue, with a direct connection to the Santa Clara Metrorail Station, continues southbound on NW 10th Avenue to NW 17th Street, where it continues eastbound to NE 2nd Avenue.

The project schedule milestones are:

Environmental Assessment: Fall 2005, Fall 2006

DBOM Procurement: Fall 2006, Spring 2007

Detailed Financial Plan: Spring 2006

Commission Approval of LPA: Fall 2006

Begin Construction: Winter 2007

Begin Operations: Spring 2010

Since City Commission approval of the Streetcar Feasibility Study, the Streetcar alignment has been expanded during subsequent project developments to include the east-west loop described above, to the vicinity of the Civic Center complex (NW 12th Avenue). At this preliminary stage of project development, a tentative site for the proposed Miami Streetcar's Maintenance and Operations Facility has been identified within the east-west Civic Center loop. Through the Alternatives Analysis process, the final location of the Streetcar's various elements, namely the Maintenance and Operations facility, stops, and traction power substations will be determined and documented.
